Gulmarg, a picturesque town just an hour’s drive from Kashmir’s capital, Srinagar, captivates travellers with its lush green meadows in summer and snowy landscapes in winter. Nestled in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas at 8694 feet, from December to March, Gulmarg transforms into a winter wonderland, offering skiing, snowboarding, gondola rides, and multiple snow-filled adventures.
For me, Gulmarg holds a special place, where I experienced the joys of a full-fledged snowfall and embraced the thrills and spills of skiing. Despite not mastering the sport like a pro, I revelled in the unique blend of exhilarating slopes and the warmth of Kashmiri hospitality. These moments have become cherished memories, drawing me back to Gulmarg each winter.
Whether you’re seeking adventure or simply revelling in nature’s beauty, Gulmarg promises an unforgettable escape. Winter paints Gulmarg in a pristine white, creating an enchanting ambiance that beckons travellers to explore its wonders. I definitely had my share of adventure and awe-inspiring moments in Gulmarg – follow my trail or choose your own path, but winter in Gulmarg will never disappoint.
1. Take the Scenic Journey from Srinagar to Gulmarg
Gulmarg, located approximately 50-52 km from the capital city of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar, offers a captivating journey for travellers. The most convenient way to reach Gulmarg is take a flight to Srinagar and then hire a personal cab or shared cab to Gulmarg.
Srinagar itself boasts captivating attractions such as the iconic Dal Lake and several breath-taking gardens. Taking a day to explore Srinagar and even experiencing a serene shikara ride on Dal Lake can be a delightful experience, especially for first-time visitors.
The road from Srinagar to Gulmarg is a scenic route, particularly enchanting during the winter months when the landscape is draped in snow. As you journey from Tangmarg uphill, you’ll be surrounded by snow-covered vistas and lush pine trees, creating a truly magnificent drive.
However, it’s important to note that due to the increasing popularity of Gulmarg during the snowy winters, traffic jams are becoming more common along the route. Nonetheless, the spectacular views along the way make any stoppages well worth it.
2. Enjoy the White Winterland Views in Gulmarg
Prepare to be captivated as you set foot in Gulmarg – a true haven of winter enchantment. The expansive meadows blanketed in snow will instantly transport you to a paradise-like realm.
Whether you’re seeking a serene snow-filled retreat or thrilling ski adventures, Gulmarg offers an experience comparable to renowned winter destinations worldwide. The Gulmarg Golf Club, enveloped in fresh snow during these months, becomes a hub for snow sports and activities, drawing tourists and locals alike.
Simply strolling through the town, basking in the cosy comforts of hotel rooms, and savouring the crisp air can invigorate your senses.
And why not infuse a dash of Bollywood charm by swaying to your favorite melodies amidst the snow-clad landscape? I’ve made it a ritual to pick a tune and dance away on the snowy hills every time I visit Gulmarg.
3. Skiing, Snowboarding, and Snow Adventures
Winter in Gulmarg is known for those seeking adventures on snow slopes. For me, the ultimate priority when visiting Gulmarg is to strap on my skis and hit the slopes.
Gulmarg offers the perfect blend of terrain for all types of skiers, from beginners to seasoned experts. What’s more, some of the slopes come equipped with convenient ski lifts to whisk you to the summit in no time. And don’t worry if you’re new to the sport – there are expert instructors available to guide you every step of the way. I highly recommend checking out First Fall Adventures and Gulmarg Snowkings.
With ski trails ranging from a manageable 300 meters to more extensive 3 kms, beginners and intermediate skiers are in for a treat. But if you’re an expert skier seeking a real adrenaline rush, off-trail heli-skiing might be just the thing for you. Accessible only by helicopters, this experience promises untouched powder snow and thrilling altitude drops of over 900 meters.
However, it’s crucial to keep safety in mind at all times. Before venturing into unknown territories for your skiing adventures, make sure to check for avalanche warnings and assess the terrain carefully.
For those who prefer snow boarding over skiing, Gulmarg has got you covered. Imagine shredding through fresh powder, with the wind in your hair and adrenaline flowing through your veins.
4. Snow Sledging and Cheering on Pro-Skiers
If skiing or snowboarding seems like too much work and yet you want to get some thrill, why not go sledging? Grab a locally crafted sled, hop on, and get ready for a wild ride down the icy slopes. With attentive porters to guide you, it’s an adrenaline-fueled journey you won’t soon forget.
During winters, Gulmarg is hub for winter sports and you will find numerous national and international pro- skiers and snow boarders. If you don’t want to put on the skiis you can marvel just watching the pros smoothly glide through the snow slopes like birds.
Also, Gulmarg hosts the Khelo India Winter Sports and several other local and national skiing events and competitions. So there’s always something exciting happening on these snow-covered slopes. So whether you’re carving through the snow or cheering from the side lines, Gulmarg promises an unforgettable winter experience for everyone.
5. Take the Mesmerising Gondola Ride
Gulmarg’s Gondola ride stands as a pinnacle experience for visitors, offering breathtaking views and unmatched heights. As one of the highest cable car systems globally, it ascends to an impressive 3,979 meters. The two-stage journey shuttles passengers between Gulmarg and the shoulder of the nearby Apharwat Peak. Throughout the journey, towering pines and snow-capped peaks embrace passengers, creating a surreal atmosphere.
Personally, I’ve embarked on this journey till Phase 1 at Kongdogri, where I was spellbound by the mountains adorned in pristine white. That is also the place for amateurs skiers like me to try out the finesse of their lessons on the baby slopes.
At this mid-way stop, indulge in the warmth of one of the many tea houses, sipping a hot beverage and relishing a paneer parantha before continuing your ascent. Also at Kongdori, snow adventure enthusiasts can partake in activities like snowmobiling and snow biking.
However, it’s essential to be mindful of the delicate ecosystem. The influx of tourists has prompted calls for tighter regulation to preserve Gulmarg’s environment. Let’s embrace responsible tourism and minimize our impact to ensure the sustainability of this natural wonderland.
6. Crafting Snow Art & Capturing Scenic Snapshots
Gulmarg, known as the snow-land of Kashmir, is not only a paradise for winter sports lovers but also a canvas for creative expressions with its abundant snowfall. Whether you’re inclined to mould your own snow masterpiece, create your unique whimsical snowman, or simply capture the awe-inspiring scenery through your camera lens, Gulmarg provides the perfect backdrop for unleashing your creativity and capturing timeless moments.
During my visit in 2022, I was amazed to witness the construction of the world’s largest igloo cafe. The following year, India’s first glass igloo restaurant was also unveiled. Also, someone had even crafted a snow Taj Mahal in Gulmarg, showcasing the boundless creativity inspired by abundance of snow. The tourism department too sometimes hosts snow sculpting competitions during the winter months, inviting visitors and locals alike.
7. Exploring Sacred Sites Amidst Snowy Landscapes
Gulmarg offers unique avenues for gaining spiritual heights as well. The Maharani Temple, also known as the Shiv Temple in Gulmarg, is a testament to the intertwining of religions.
Built by Maharaja Hari Singh for his wife Maharani Mohini Bai Sisodia in 1915, it reflects the royal heritage of the Dogra dynasty. Despite its Hindu origins, the temple now sees rituals performed by a Muslim priest, symbolizing harmony.

Also, 5 km from Gulmarg is a famous shrine named after a known Muslim scholar and Saint, Baba Reshi. Tourists from different parts of the world visit here to look at the shrine’s Mughal and Persian styles of architecture.
8. Savouring Hot Delights in Frosty Settings
When in Kashmir, indulging in the local cuisine is a must-do experience. For non-vegetarians, the tantalizing flavors of Kashmiri Wazwan, Yakhni, Seekh Kebab, and Rogan Josh await. Vegetarians can savor the delightful Kashmiri dum aloo. And to complement these rich dishes, a cup of Kashmiri Kahwa is the perfect choice, with its blend of green tea leaves, cinnamon, saffron, cardamom, and rose petals.
One of the highlights for me was the delightful lunch breaks at the baby slope, nestled amidst the snowy landscape, during ski sessions. There’s nothing quite like enjoying some piping hot masala maggi, aloo paranthas, or samosas, paired with brewing hot Kahwa, to refuel and recharge for the afternoon ski adventures. Numerous small shacks dotting the area offer these delicious snacks and beverages, adding to the charm of the Gulmarg experience.
9. Embark on Trekking Adventures in the Snow
For adventurers seeking an extra thrill, consider embarking on a snow hill trek or visiting the frozen waterfall called Drung in Tanmarg. I haven’t yet attempted any of the trekking here, but if you consider wearing heavy ski boots and walking every day for 2-3 kms, then I had some taste of it.
During winter, many trekking tracks are closed due to heavy snowfall. However, destinations like Tangmarg remain open and provide thrilling experiences. Despite being 18 km from Gulmarg, the journey to Tangmarg is picturesque. Ensure you’re accompanied by a knowledgeable guide and a reliable porter for a safe and enjoyable trek.
Additionally, one can venture on a trek to the pristine Alpather Lake, depending on weather conditions. Situated at an altitude of 4,390 m at the base of the twin Apharwat peaks, Alpather Lake is a sight to behold, particularly during extreme winter when it freezes over.
10. Souvenir Hunting & Kashmiri Keepsakes
For avid souvenir collectors like myself, exploring the Main Market in Gulmarg is a must to bring back cherished Kashmiri memories. The market boasts a variety of unique handicrafts, including intricately woven carpets and mats, which are available at reasonable rates.
Handmade metal items also catch the eye, serving as excellent souvenirs and home decor pieces. Gulmarg offers a delightful assortment of goods, including pashmina shawls, silk carpets, walnut wood knick-knacks, papier-mâché handicrafts, and stone jewelry. Visitors can also find woollen wears and ski gears, perfect for embracing the winter spirit or taking home practical mementos of their Gulmarg adventure.
Don’t forget to explore the culinary delights of Gulmarg’s markets as well, with offerings like saffron, dry fruits, Kashmiri walnuts, and more, ideal for sharing the flavours of Kashmir with loved ones back home.
If you’re eager to immerse yourself further in the winter wonders of Kashmir, consider extending your stay and embarking on a scenic drive to Pahalgam or Sonamarg.
Whether you’re seeking adventure, tranquility, or simply a change of scenery, Gulmarg and Kashmir in winter offers unforgettable experiences and moments of pure bliss.
